The Magic Number: Why “3-Par” is the Minimum for Hotel Linen Efficiency
One of the most common questions new hoteliers ask us at Galaxy Hospitality is: “I have 100 rooms, so I need 100 sets of sheets, right?”
The answer is a resounding NO. Buying only one set per bed (1-Par) is a recipe for operational disaster.
Understanding “Par Level”—the quantity of linen inventory required to support daily operations—is crucial for smooth housekeeping and protecting your investment.
1. What is a “Par”? The Cycle of Circulation
In the hospitality industry, “One Par” (1-Par) equals the total amount of linen needed to set up every guest room in the hotel one time.
However, linen moves in a constant cycle. To avoid shortages, the industry gold standard is 3-Par. Here is why the “Rule of 3” exists:
Par 1 (In the Room): The linen currently on the bed being used by the guest.
Par 2 (In the Laundry): The dirty linen from yesterday that is currently being washed, dried, or ironed.
Par 3 (On the Shelf): The clean linen in the storage closet, ready for tomorrow’s shift.
Without 3-Par: If a laundry machine breaks down or a large group checks out late, your housekeeping team will have zero sheets to make beds for incoming guests.
2. The Hidden Benefit: Letting Cotton “Rest”
Buying more linen actually saves you money in the long run. Why? Because cotton fibers need to rest.
When linen is washed, it is subjected to high heat, chemicals, and mechanical stress. If you operate on a low Par level (e.g., 2-Par), the sheets are taken from the dryer and immediately put back on the bed.
The Stress Factor: Hot, stressed fibers are brittle. Putting them back in service immediately causes them to tear and wear out 30% faster.
The Resting Period: Having a 3rd or 4th Par on the shelf allows the fibers to cool down, re-absorb natural humidity from the air, and regain flexibility before being used again.
3. When Do You Need 4-Par or 5-Par?
While 3-Par is the minimum, Galaxy Hospitality recommends 4-Par or 5-Par for specific scenarios:
Outsourced Laundry: If you send linen to an external laundry factory, the turnaround time is slower (often 24-48 hours). You need extra stock to cover the delivery gap.
High Occupancy/Turnover: Hotels with very high occupancy (90%+) or resorts with multiple daily turnovers (like hourly hotels or spas) need a higher buffer.
Emergency Buffer: Unexpected stains, tears, or “souvenirs” (guests taking towels) deplete inventory. A 4th Par acts as your safety net.
Conclusion: Planning for Success
Don’t let a linen shortage paralyze your housekeeping department. By calculating the correct Par Level, you ensure a seamless guest experience and extend the lifespan of your sheets and towels.
